Science Club students removed weeds, installed new plants, mulched, and watered the school’s existing rain garden.

Students in Science Club spent time outdoors on May 27th working on the school’s rain garden. Students removed weeds and dried grass clippings, from the surrounding lawn area, from the garden. Once the garden was cleared students planted twenty-one new quart size native plants in the garden. Species included Wild Bergamot, Butterfly weed, Swamp Milkweed, Purple Coneflower, Blue Vervain, Cardinal Flower, and Boneset. These new species joined existing plants from its installation in spring of 2013. During the planting process a group of students found a slug attached to the side of a plant.

After the new plants were installed students added a new layer of mulch to promote growth and aid in retaining moisture for the new plants.  A group of four students carried buckets to the water spigot to water the rain garden.

Students could see the instant improvement their hard work reflected in a short period of time.
