Rain Garden South Jefferson Elementary School, Charles Town, WV South Jefferson Elementary students worked with Cacapon Institute and Kohl’s employees to install a 200 square foot rain garden on the school’s playground. Ranson, WV Kohl’s employees volunteered through their Kohl’s Cares volunteer program in conjunction with Earth Day and in a partnership with Cacapon Institute. The volunteers helped to space the plants in the garden prior to the student’s arrival outdoors and they were essential in helping the student’s plant in the garden throughout the morning. Jefferson County Soil Waste Authority donated a yard of mulch for the project. Student’s grades 3rd through 5th rotated outdoors during their gym class to plant native plants in the rain garden space. Students briefly discussed with CI’s Outreach Coordinator, Molly Barkman, what a rain garden is, what the benefits are for the school and environment, and the proper way to plant a plant. Students worked together in partner groups to slowly accomplish the large task of planting 120 native plants. There were a total of 270 students that participated in this project. At the conclusion of the project all of the students had a fun time and left their legacy at the school for years to come. |
