Rain Garden and Tree Plantings Maintenance

Wildwood Middle School, Shenandoah Junction, WV

Select 7th and 8th grade science classes rotated throughout the morning to participate in the maintenance of two existing projects at the school. In the fall of 2013, the school planted five groupings of shrubs at the font of the campus through WV Project CommuniTree. These shrub groupings needed to have the perimeter edged and additional mulch added to each.

In the spring of 2013, Caroline Moffat’s 7th grade honors science class installed a rain garden at the base of the visitor parking lot. The rain garden needed to have weeds removed, new plants installed, and a fresh layer of mulch added. Some of her current students helped to achieve those needs.

At the end of the morning all of the students that participated in the maintenance projects were able to see their hard work as they left school for the day.

Two yards of mulch for this project was donated by Jefferson County Solid Waste Authority.
